Day 1 - 2 Cape Town
You will be met at the departure point today and given a briefing of the tour
schedule and the tourleader will be avaailable to answer any questions.
Cape Town has lots to
offer. Architecture range from historic buildings built by the VOC (Dutch
East India Company) to ultra-modern buildings at the Waterfront. Noteworthy
places include the Castle of Good Hope, the St-Georges Cathedral, the South African
Museum, Victoria and Alfred Waterfront shopping complex and many more. No
visit to the city would be complete without a visit to Table Mountain and Robben Island.
Day 3 Cape
Town – Stellenbosch
Today
you will be taken to the historical town of Stellenbosch, which is an hours
drive from Cape Town. Stellenbosch is the second oldest town in South Africa and is famous for its University and the thriving wine industry. We will go
for a formal wine tasting on a wine estate.
Day 4 Cape Town – Mossel Bay
Our journey takes us Eastwards past Somerset West and over the Sir Lowry’s
pass towards the coastal town of Mossel Bay today. En route you will stop in Hermanus,
which is famous for sightings of the Southern Right Whale, which can be seen
here from June through December. You continue afterwards long the Garden Route towards your campsite overlooking the Ocean.
Day 5 - Mossel Bay – Tsitsi-Kamma
Today’s drive will take you along one of the most spectacular roads in Southern Africa and past towns such as Wilderness and Knysna. We should arrive in the park
just after lunch. The Tsitsi-Kamma NP has lots of well marked hiking trails and
the scenery is unmatched. The campsite is right on the oceanfront and the lush
vegetation surrounding you gives you a tropical feeling.
Day 6 – Tsitsi-Kamma National Park
Besides
the numerous hiking trails you can go on a boat ride up the storms river, go
black water tubing, jump the highest bungee in the world or go tree hopping.
Day 7 Tsitsikama – Addo Elephant Park
The
drive today heads to the Addo Elephant Park which as the name suggest houses
the most Elephants to be found in the Southern Half of South Africa. It is
not easy to spot the Elephants though due to the vegetation and their
excellent camouflage. Relax at the waterhole through the night to see all the
nocturnal animals coming to drink.
Day 8 Addo Elephant Park – Aliwal North
Due to the distance between Addo and the Drakensberg the decision was made to
split the day in two and stay in the small town of Aliwal North. This farming
town is situated on the banks of the Orange River, which is the largest river
in South Africa. You can relax in some of the warm water baths at the
campsite to relieve aches and strains after an 8 to 9 hour drive.
Day 9 – 11 Aliwal
North - Lesotho
After a beautiful drive today you will
arrive in the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.
Many peaks in the country are as high as
3500 meters and are covered in snow in the winter. The homogenous country is
made up of the Basotho people distinctive for their hats and blankets they
wear.
The contrast between South Africa and Lesotho will soon become apparent.
Lesotho is one of the poorest countries in the
world and the majority of the population lives through subsistence farming.
Various hiking trails and rides on the rugged Basotho Pony are available at
the camp.
Day 12 Lesotho - Golden Gate National Park
The
next two nights will be spent in the spectacular Drakensberg Mountains. This evening you will be staying in the Golden Gate National Park. The 960 km
mountain range stretches from the Stormberg in the Eastern Cape Province to
the Wolkberg in the Mpumalanga Province. The Golden Gate Park is so called due to the golden colour of the walls of the valley which you will be staying
in. You can go on numerous hiking trails in the mountains
surrounding the campsite.
Day 13 Golden Gate
National Park – Royal Natal Park
The most striking feature of this area of
the Drakensberg is the Amphitheatre rock face. The enormous 1200m, 8 km wall
is flanked by the Sentinel (3274m) and Eastern Pillar (3133m) peaks. The
mountains were named by the Voortrekkers, who thought the range looked like
the tail of a Dragon. The most noteworthy peak must be the Mont-aux-Sources
(3298m) peak where the Tugela and Orange Rivers originate. Numerous walks can
be done here to accommodate any person fit or not. Horse rides are also
available for advances and absolute novices.
Day 14 – 15 Royal
Natal Park – St Lucia
Today you will be heading back to the
coast to the tropical town of St. Lucia.
This
small town has a main street with a large variety of Restaurants and stores
to browse through. There are various optional activities offered in this
tourist town such as Deep Sea Fishing, Sunset Cruises, Doplhin Cruises,
Gamedrives, Snorkeling and many more.
Day 16 – 17 Day St. Lucia – Swaziland
The Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary has the look and feel of traditional Swazi
homesteads with grass dome-shaped huts arranged in semi-circles, central log
fires and seating areas, all semi-enclosed by traditional Swazi kraal
fencing. The Mlilwane Camp is open to all wildlife to meander between your tents
and might just try visit while you are sitting by the fire or en route to the
bathroom. (no predators) The restaurant/ cocktail bar on site serves an
excellent buffet which usually contains some interesting Game Meats. After
dinner traditional dances take place next to the main dinner boma.
Day 18 - 19 Swaziland – Kruger National Park
Just outside of
Mlilwane you will have a chance to buy a few hand made curios at an open-air
craft market. In
the afternoon you will arrive at the world famous Kruger National Park and immediately start your first game drive to look for ‘The Big Five’. This
evening will be spent in one of the parks campsites. You can decide to do gamedrives in our own
vehicle on the main roads or take an optional open safari vehicle gamedrive
to experience the wildlife off the beaten track the next day!
Day 20 Kruger National Park – Sabie
After visiting places like Gods Window and Bourkes Luck Potholes you will
head to the
historical mining town of Pilgrims Rest. En route there are
numerous spectacular views and cultural centres to be visited. This evening
will be spent in Sabie, a quiet little town driven by the forestry services
in the area.
Day 21 Sabie – Pretoria
Today will be spent driving to the capitol City of South Africa, Pretoria, where
the tour will end. The drive will pass through the Lowveld area onto the
Highveld, where Pretoria and Johannesburg lie. If time allows you can go on a
guided tour of Soweto or visit the Union Buildings, which is the Seat of the
South African Government.
